Collaborative management partnerships (CMP), a type of public-private partnership for the conservation sector, are increasingly being used globally to strengthen protected area management and to promote sustainable development. More than 18 African governments are partnering with NGOs and the private sector in protected area management through CMPs to attract investment and technical capacity, and bolster rural development. With the success of CMPs in demonstrating positive conservation, social, and economic outcomes, a comprehensive review of these CMPs and their role in conserving wildlife and catalyzing rural development is presented in the new Global Wildlife Program toolkit Collaborative Management Partnership Toolkit. The Toolkit serves as a reference guide for governments and implementing partners considering CMPs, raises awareness of CMP experiences in Africa to highlight lessons learned and outlines how to engage in CMPs. While the case studies and lessons in the Toolkit are derived from national protected areas in Africa, it can be applied to private and community protected areas as well as other protected areas around the world.
The Global Wildlife Program is funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by the World Bank.
